The two most popular methods of getting paid as a temporary worker is through a limited company, or with a PAYE umbrella company. Ever since IR35 legislation was rolled out in 2000, the government has worked hard to ensure disguised employees were not taking advantage of tax benefits that they should not have been entitled to. Over 20 years later, IR35 remains a hot topic and one that brings much debate within the contractor payroll sector.

If you work on an assignment that is outside IR35, operating through a limited company is usually the most cost-effective, and the option that will legally help you maximise your pay retention. However, if you are inside IR35, an umbrella company is probably your best option for your payroll.

Umbrella companies are commonly the first choice for workers who:

• Are inside IR35 (either in the public or private sector)
• Are only contracting for a short period of time
• Earn under £15.00 per hour
• Don’t want to run a limited company

Registering with Churchill Knight Umbrella is really straightforward, and you can be set up and ready to be paid in under 15 minutes!

Once the registration has been complete, we will be responsible for paying you (PAYE). Churchill Knight Umbrella will enter into an overarching contract with your agency (or client directly if no agency). You, the contractor, will need to go to work with your client as usual. Once you have completed the work, timesheets will need to be submitted to your client, agency and Churchill Knight Umbrella.

When we have received your timesheet(s), we’ll invoice your agency accordingly. Your agency will then pay us your gross salary. Once we have your gross salary, we’ll make the legal deductions to your pay and will then process your payroll. As soon as Churchill Knight Umbrella has paid you, you’ll receive an SMS message, and your payslip will be accessible via our online portal.
